The California ISO is currently accepting applications for university and graduate students majoring in Electrical Engineering or related fields for internship positions in the summer of 2025. This is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience working with one of the leading organizations responsible for managing the flow of electricity across California’s high-voltage power grid. The California ISO is a neutral operator, ensuring reliable electricity delivery across 80% of California’s power grid, impacting millions of lives daily.
Internship Overview
As a Power Systems Engineering Intern, you will be part of an organization that safeguards the economy and well-being of 30 million Californians by operating the grid reliably 24/7. This internship will span 10-12 weeks during the summer of 2025. You’ll have the chance to work on interesting and challenging assignments that will help develop and enhance your skills in the energy sector.
What You Will Be Doing
Past assignments have included:
- Participating in project implementation teams to ensure successful implementation of key power systems software applications.
- Learning about new Energy Management System (EMS) software and upgrades.
- Performing outage studies, application testing, tool development, and modeling updates.
- Creating new tools and automations to support outage studies and improve efficiencies.
- Using engineering models to identify market impacts and prepare reports subject to industry, regulatory, and peer review.

Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in an undergraduate, Master’s, or Ph.D. program in Electrical Engineering or a related field, with a focus on Power Systems.
- Expected graduation date: December 2025 or later.
- Previous internships, research, or work experience in the electric industry is preferred.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office.
- Strong presentation, oral, and written communication skills.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strong understanding of Power Systems concepts.
- Familiarity with tools like PSLF, PSSE, PowerWorld, or MATLAB is highly desirable.
Compensation
The pay range for Power Systems Engineering Interns at the California ISO is $28 – $33 per hour.
